The Format - Dog Problems (entire album)
Guys, this is the season of the break up, look it up if you don’t believe me - a lot of people break up during this time of year.
“Dog Problems” is the break up record. The Format is Nate and Sam, and Nate bleeds all over this record.
You can thread the progress of his emotional recovery post break up from the dazed and nostalgic opener “Matches” (You still haven’t called, so I wait til they’re closin the bar. I made a wish but the match never lit)
- followed by the failed attempt at rebounding with “She Doesn’t Get It” (I tried it once, it never caught on. I was the only one who got burned).
- The end of the album finds Nate picking himself up by his bootstraps and carrying on with his life in “If Work Permits” - he’s not 100% better, but he’s got his defiant spirit back. Nate singing about his girlfriend’s traumatic childhood experiences marring how she forms loving relationships now that she’s older is one of the best moments in music history, hands down.
- (It’s a shame what your father did to your brother’s head when he smashed it with a telephone. Your mother got scared and locked the door, you were only 4, but lord you remember it. So now you’re scared of love, but love just ain’t some blood on the receiver.)
Anyway - this is a really great album and the title track, ‘Dog Problems’ is like the indie break up Bohemian Rhapsody part 2 of our generation. Those are all the clichés I could muster. It’s good give it a listen, and then listen to the entire album on Spotify. Or buy it, if you haven’t spent all your iTunes giftcards on TapFish 2.
